The Financial Times Stock Exchange (or FTSE - said "footsie") is independent company, originally jointly created by the Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange. It creates and manages indices and data. Although others exists, the FTSE indices are the best known indices to cover companies quoted on the London Stock Exchange.
The FTSE 100 index monitors the share prices of the top 100 companies according to market capitalisation listed on the London Stock Exchange. The FTSE 250 monitors the top 250 businesses and the FTSE ALLSHARE monitors all shares on the London Stock Exchange.
